With Chan Gailey retiring yesterday it leaves the New York Jets to find a new offensive mastermind to take the reins of a struggling offense.
Immediately after New York Jets‘ offensive coordinator Chan Gailey retired, many names began to circulate for potential replacements.Names like Mike McCoy, the former San Diego Chargers head coach, John DeFilippo, the Philadelphia Eagles quarterback coach, who has done a nice job with first-year quarterback Carson Wentz, Chip Kelly, the San Francisco 49ers head coach have surfaced as candidates among many others.
However, if there’s one thing this Jets’ organization needs the most, it’s someone who has seen it all.
64-year old Norv Turner is the best choice for the Jets because of the experience he brings to the table, as he has been coaching in the National Football League with the Cowboys, Redskins, Raiders, 49ers, Chargers, Browns and Vikings since 1985.
Wisdom is not the only thing he brings to an organization as he has established himself a very successful play caller. Just look at the job he did in the early 90’s for the Dallas Cowboys during their glory days.
Most recently Turner was the offensive coordinator for the Minnesota Vikings. He started there in 2014 where he did an exceptional job in the development process of the young Teddy Bridgewater.
By 2015, Turner’s offense helped lead the Vikings to a division title. Turner resigned in week 8 this past season but the Vikings were sporting a 5-2 record. They finished off the year 3-6 following his departure.
Now, he’s is expected to entertain quite a few offers from teams that are looking for someone to run their offense, so the Jets must move quickly to bring him in.
He can help the Jets young quarterbacks like Bryce Petty and Christian Hackenberg or perhaps another quarterback the Jets may draft develop like he did for Teddy Bridgewater.
Over the years the New York Jets have been through a handful of offensive coordinators and absolutely none of them have had success. The Jets need to bring in a guy like Turner who has had a history of being successful in running offenses.
Also, quarterbacks seem to develop or excel in his play calling, which, unless you live under a rock, everyone could agree is an area the New York Jets could improve on.
