In wake of Canelo Alvarez six month suspension which canceled his May 5 rematch with Gennady Golovkin, there’s added importance to the Daniel Jacobs versus Maciej Sulecki fight on Saturday.
This Saturday night at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, Daniel “Miracle Man” Jacobs (33-2, 29 KOs) will take on Maciej Sulecki (26-0, 10 KOs) in a fight that gets more and more intriguing with what’s been happening in the middleweight division of late.
The May 5 rematch between unified middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin against Canelo Alvarez has been canceled due to Alvarez six month suspension following two failed drug test.
Golovkin will still fight on May 5, but it will be against Vanes Martirosyan who is taking the fight on very short notice and is a fight that has not generated much excitement for boxing fans.
So that leaves Jacobs versus Sulecki as the marquee middleweight fight for the first half of 2018.
The 31-year-old Jacobs is not just considered one of the best middleweights in the world, but one of the best fighters pound for pound. He’s fast, athletic, and has a good defense. His 29 knockouts indicate he has knockout power in both hands.

He has two knockout wins over Sergio Mora, and a first-round knockout over Peter Quillin at the Barclays Center in December 2015.
Jacobs’ also has a tremendous heart as he demonstrated in his fight with Golovkin in March of 2017. In that match, he got up from a knockdown in the fourth round and had a back and forth battle with Golovkin and lost a close decision (115–112, 115–112, and 114–113). Then, of course, he’s a cancer survivor which means he can handle any adversity in and out of the ring.
His counterpart on Saturday Sulecki may not be well known to some boxing fans, but he’s no stranger when it comes to fighting at the Barclays Center.
In January 2016, he stopped Derrick Findley in the seventh round via TKO.

In fighting Jacobs he’ll be facing the toughest opponent of his career. But, he is unfazed and confident heading into the showdown since he has yet to taste defeat in his professional career.
Jacobs is a heavy favorite to win but he knows he can’t look past Sulecki and he wants to give his hometown fans in Brooklyn a spectacular performance.
Should Jacobs win he’ll be in line to have his rematch with Golovkin who, at this time, does not seem interested in fighting Alvarez once his suspension is up. Of course, if Sulecki pulls off the upset, he’ll be mentioned as a possible opponent for Golovkin.
Although there are no titles on the line, there’s a lot at stake in this fight.
