New York Yankees

In the second Subway Series opener of 2015 the New York Mets come away with the 5-1 victory over Masahiro Tanaka and the New York Yankees.

The usual theme that’s surrounded these New York Mets since the trade deadline held true once again tonight: Clutch and timely hitting shined again.

It was once again the lineup who lifted the Mets, this time to a 5-1 victory over the New York Yankees in Game 1 of the second Subway Series of the season.

Daniel Murphy came up with the biggest hit, a solo home run in the sixth-inning of Chasen Shreve.

Murphy gave the Mets a 2-1 lead in a game which both Masahiro Tanaka and Steven Matz pitched beautifully through six innings each.

The one difference was this: Matz battled through 102 pitches while not having his best stuff. Tanaka breezed through his six innings in just 82 pitches. And still, Joe Girardi pulled the plug on him and went to the lefty Shreve.

Matz scattered seven hits and allowed a first-inning sac-fly. Tanaka’s only blemish was a Lucas Duda solo home run in the second-inning.

Clutch hitting for the Amazin’s continued even after Murphy’s blast. Terry Collins pointed the finger at Juan Uribe to pinch-hit in the seventh-inning. He promptly served an opposite field shot for a two-run home run to extend the lead to 4-1.

Murphy later tripled in the eighth-inning which provided the Mets a little insurance.

Although the score was 5-1 Collins went with his best bullpen arm, Jeurys Familia, to take the last three outs of the game in a non-save situation. Though he got himself into trouble – loading the bases (including an Alex Rodrgiuez walk) – Familia battled through it to preserve the victory for the Mets. He got Brett Garnder to fly out to left and struck out Chase Headley on a nasty sinker.

With the Blue Jays winning 6-1 against the Red Sox tonight the Yanks now fall to 4.5 behind in the AL East. For the moment the Mets extend the NL East lead to a full eight games over the Nationals who are currently playing in extra-innings against those pesky Marlins.

Game 2 from Citi Field will take place Saturday afternoon.
