The Chicago White Sox are reportedly going to pursue free-agent right-handed pitcher Zack Wheeler this offseason.

Will Zack Wheeler be returning to the New York Mets in 2020? As of late, signs are pointing towards “no.” The veteran right-hander is a free agent, having recently rejected the Mets’ qualifying offer. He could re-sign with New York, but per reports, a new team has involved themselves in the mix.

According to sources close to Andy Martino of SNY, the Chicago White Sox are expected to be players for Wheeler. He would be a nice pickup for that organization, especially since they just landed catcher Yasmani Grandal as well.

The White Sox finished in third place in the American League Central division this past year with a record of 72-89.

The Mets could’ve dealt Wheeler prior to the July 31 trade deadline, as numerous postseason contenders could’ve used him as a rental pitcher in return for minor leaguers. However, the deadline came and went, with Wheeler playing out what could’ve definitely been his final campaign in Queens.

The New York Yankees are another team that has emerged as a potential landing spot for Wheeler. Bombers general manager Brian Cashman recently said that they’d be “checking in” on him this offseason. It’s unclear when Wheeler will make his ultimate decision on who he’ll end up with.

But as one pitcher potentially leaves for the Mets, another one stays. General manager Brodie Van Wagenen noted this week that the organization wouldn’t be dealing right-hander Noah Syndergaard this winter. Thor struggled in 2019, finishing with a below-average ERA of 4.28.
