After somehow becoming buyers at the trade deadline, Pete Alonso is urging New York Mets fans to get excited about this team.

The New York Mets are surging right now, winners of five straight and seven of their last nine. NL Rookie of the Year favorite Pete Alonso is urging Mets fans to get ready for the stretch run.

He took to Twitter to pump up the fanbase and call for their continued support.

“Our goal is to make history,” wrote Alonso. “We strive every day to be great and nothing less.”

“We need you guys, the fans, more than ever these last two months. Together, let’s be a part of history. LFGM.”

Alonso certainly knows how to endear himself to the Mets faithful. Not only is he on the fast track to winning rookie of the year, but he took home the Home Run Derby crown with a major performance in Cleveland earlier in July.

The righty slugger is currently slashing .260/.365/.593 with 34 home runs and 77 runs batted in.

Although a playoff run seems improbable, it wouldn’t be unprecedented. In 2015, the Mets were down and out before acquiring Yoenis Cespedes at the deadline. They would later chase down the Washington Nationals in the NL East and make a run to the World Series for the first time since 2000.

The 2019 version of that comeback will be a bit more difficult. As of July 31, the Mets are 11 games behind the first-place Atlanta Braves. On July 31, the Mets were just two games behind the first-place Nationals.

However, the Mets still have an avenue to the postseason through the Wild Card. The race is wide open and the Mets sit five games back for the second spot in the NL Wild Card Game.

Whether or not the team can make a run remains to be seen, but Pete Alonso is hoping he can spur Mets fans to rally behind them.
