The New York Mets might opt to use Robinson Cano at first base, but the veteran makes it clear he wants to remain at second base.
The New York Mets have a conundrum in the infield. They are trying to figure out where everything fits and Robinson Cano is one of the puzzle pieces.
Although it’s expected that Cano will see some time at first base, the former All-Star still wants to stay at second base.
“I want to stay there until my contract is over,” Cano said to Dan Martin of the New York Post. “That’s my goal.
“If I can play second, that’s where I want to be,” Cano said. “Trust me, if I lost my range, I’d be the first person to say, ‘I think it’s time for me to move’ or go to DH if that happens [in the National League].”
The Mets have Cano under contract through the 2023 season when he’ll be 40. It’s unlikely that Cano lasts as the everyday second baseman that long.
That being said, Cano should have every opportunity to earn the everyday job at second in 2019. Jed Lowrie is another potential second baseman for manager Mickey Callaway, but he’s dealing with his own injury problems already. Furthermore, the team is making it clear that they want to see Jeff McNeil playing some corner outfield.
Cano’s bat isn’t the issue, but some are worried about his glove. The 36-year-old isn’t buying it.
“If I can move and turn the double play, why I switch to another position?” Cano said.
He’s not wrong. Cano has always been a strong defender despite his effortless look on the field. Perhaps he and shortstop Amed Rosario can form some chemistry and become a dynamic duo up the middle.
Cano has made it clear that he’s willing to adapt if necessary, but right now he’s asking for a chance to show what he can do.
