Don La Greca of The Michael Kay Show on ESPN Radio New York and YES Network put forth an epic rant on Friday when a caller chose Matt Forte to score a touchdown.
I’ve said it before many times and I’ll say it again: “Mike & The Mad Dog” is the single-most impactful reason Elite Sports NY exists today. Therefore, I’m a diehard Mike Francesa, Chris Russo and WFAN fan going as far back as the early 1990s (as a young 11-year-old who sold his soul for a 1994 Stanley Cup.
But that doesn’t mean I haven’t peaked in on on the other channel from time-to-time.
I was there over a decade ago when “The Michael Kay” show started on ESPN Radio New York in the 10-to-1 shift. They eventually took the vacant afternoon drive slot and never looked back in terms of second-fiddle. One man involved with the show, however, isn’t second fiddle.
Don La Greca is the only New York radio man at the moment who can give Francesa a real run for his money in the department of diehard sports talk.
[membership level="0"] [/membership]It’s also led to a few hilarious rants by La Greca, with the latest coming on Friday afternoon when a caller predicted Matt Forte as the man who’d score the New York Jets first touchdown on Sunday against the Miami Dolphins (video above).
It’s pure gold. Only La Greca can match the Sports Pope in this area and he sure does give him a run for his money.
While we’re discussing the man, how could we not plug ESNY’s interview with the ESPN employee conducted during last year’s New York Rangers hockey season via Frank Curto?
Interview or not, those classic Don La Greca rants are starting to come in quicker than the WFAN man can fall asleep live while speaking to Sweeny Murti.
Honestly, how unbelievable would it be if the two got together for the latest and greatest diehard sports radio show in the city? No more casual Rosenberg. No more Kay. It’d be just Donnie and the Pope to go along with epic rants and New York City traffic.
