The New York Mets continued last year’s trend of taking collegiate pitchers early in the draft. Their first round pick, David Peterson, hails from the Oregon Ducks. The moment is one that Peterson will surely replay in his mind for the next several months.
The towering lefty stands at 6’6 and once struck out 20 batters in a game earlier this season. After drafting pitchers early in 2016, the Mets continued to add college age pitchers with their first pick this season.
Given how injury prone their current starting rotation is, it makes sense to build depth in the minors. Additionally, the contracts some of the current starters will command likely will surpass Sandy Alderson’s budget, providing even more reason to have high profile pitching prospects lurking amongst multiple levels of the minor leagues.
