New York Knicks: Carmelo Anthony's late and close field goal percentage is terrible

One of the reasons the New York Knicks continue to lose in gut-wrenching fashion is because Carmelo Anthony‘s late and close FG% is awful.

The hurt continues for the New York Knicks and their loyal followers.

When Carmelo Anthony’s 3-point shot circled in-and-out on Saturday night, the Knickerbockers slipped to seven games under the .500 mark. Down by two, the great look from downtown could easily describe the entire season — touching every bit of the rim only to fall harmlessly to the court with no points to count.

The worst part is, no matter the situation, New York seems to always fall in the close game. One of the reasons is Melo’s poor shooting.

ESPN’s Ohm Younmisuk posted a dandy of a stat exemplifying this notion.

When games are within 5 points in the last 5 minutes (including OT), Carmelo Anthony is shooting 31.3% (15-of-48), the 3rd-lowest field goal percentage among players with at least 30 attempts according to ESPN Stats and Info. Derrick Rose is shooting 44.4% (20-of-45) and Kristaps Porzingis is making 39.4% (13-of-33). “It’s keeping the belief in and the faith in ourselves and one another to know that when we lose (on) one or two plays you can’t fault the effort,” Anthony said of losing in close games. “The effort is there. There’s something that’s not going our way. We’re not doing the small things… When you’re losing games you have to work that much harder to make sure those things don’t happen.”

Even KP isn’t at the 40 percent mark. At least Derrick Rose is at 44.4 percent.

If Jeff Hornacek‘s squad wants to change their late-game fortunes, Melo sill have to close out much more effectively.
