New York Yankees: Gary Sanchez Lands On DL With Cracked Thumb

The New York Yankees have lost one of their prized prospects, Gary Sanchez, after breaking his right thumb at Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.

[sc name=”Christian Kouroupakis” ]New York Yankees top catching prospect, Gary Sanchez, has gone down with a broken thumb after a foul ball crushed his right throwing hand on Wednesday’s 7-1 Railriders win.

He was sent to New York to receive X-Rays and they did, in fact, reveal a non-displaced fracture on his right thumb he has been placed on the minor league disabled list and will be re-evaluated in approximately two weeks.

Sanchez was ranked the Yankees’ No. 3 prospect by MLB.com and No. 2 by Baseball America (No. 36 overall) entering the 2016 campaign. The Yankees inked Sanchez to a contract for $2.5 million as a 16-year-old from the Dominican Republic.

The catcher has been placed on the minor-league disabled list and will be re-evaluated in two weeks.

The 23-year-old catcher had a slash line of .290/.333/.529 prior to the injury at Scranton/Wilkes-Barre along with a .989 OPS in May. Last week, the Yankees called him up temporarily to be in the lineup as a designated hitter.

It is such an unfortunate blow to the young backstop who was thought to be the backup catcher this season but lost the position after being out-hit by Austin Romine.

In spring training, Sanchez slashed .091/.259/.136 in 22 total at-bats and is hitless in his first six plate appearances at the Major League level.
