New York Giants star running back Saquon Barkley feels rookie quarterback and first-round pick Daniel Jones is a “competitor.”
To start off his NFL career, New York Giants running back Saquon Barkley is spending time with Eli Manning as his quarterback. The tough thing for him is that soon enough, he’ll have to get acclimated playing with a new quarterback. The Giants selected Daniel Jones with the No. 6 pick in this year’s draft, and he’ll surely be Manning’s successor at some point.
Despite the early (and unnecessary) criticism, Jones has been impressing coaches and teammates thus far in training camp. Barkley is excited to work with Jones and praised him during an appearance on “Boomer & Gio” on WFAN on Tuesday.
“He can play,” the 2018 AP Offensive Rookie of the Year said. “You see flashes and glimpses on the field. I’m really excited to see him go out there and play live against the Jets Thursday. You can see he’s a competitor.”
The Giants open up their preseason schedule against the New York Jets on Thursday night at 7:00 p.m. ET.
With the trade of Odell Beckham Jr. in March, Barkley will now be the ultimate, without-a-doubt face of the franchise. Despite leading the league last year with 2,028 scrimmage yards, the Giants may ask him to do even more this year.
This could bring about worries from fans regarding his workload. However, Barkley doesn’t see too much concern with the matter.
“There are probably a lot of people that are concerned about that. I realize that,” Barkley said. “It’s not their body, it’s my body. I know how passionate I am about this game. I know how passionate about my team. When I say I’ll do whatever it takes to help my team win games, I really mean it.”
