Brooklyn Nets guard Spencer Dinwiddie is irrationally confident, and it’s futile to try and change his personality.
It doesn’t matter what the numbers say or what your opinion is: Brooklyn Nets point guard Spencer Dinwiddie believes he’s unguardable.
“I don’t believe that anybody can guard me,” proclaimed the 24-year-old while taking questions from the media on Monday (h/t James Herbert of CBS Sports). (Also, notice the guy in the picture on Dinwiddie’s left. Yeah, him, with the quizzical look. How long until he becomes a meme?)
Dinwiddie may not have the shooting percentages or scoring totals to back up his comments, but he gets points for the unabashed confidence. Last season, he averaged 12.6 points while shooting a piddling 38.7 percent from the floor and 32.6 percent from three.
Dinwiddie did, however, have more than a couple of games where he caught fire and left audiences looking confused but entertained.
He dropped a season-best 31 points on the Toronto Raptors back on Jan. 8. A couple of weeks later, he shocked the Philadelphia 76ers by going for 26 points.
Those performances weren’t consistent. But they happened more frequently than years previous. Let’s keep our fingers crossed and pray that the totals continue to grow exponentially.
All of those bad games with questionable attempts and unflattering percentages are in the past. Spencer Dinwiddie is gearing up for a new season. He’s playing for not only a starting spot but also a new contract. Are his comments wild? Absolutely. Could he have kept them to himself? Perhaps. But that’s not fun. And, remember, sports are supposed to be fun.
