New York Mets Amazin’ News, 4/9/17: Another Lucas Duda Bomb, More Bullpen Struggles

Elite Sports NY has all the New York Mets news, including another anemic night from the offense and more issues stemming from the bullpen.

[dropcap]T[/dropcap]he same old narrative that’s taking over the opening to the 2017 season has been around for three years now — a streaky, anemic New York Mets lineup can’t seem to consistently back-up the solid or great starting pitching performances of their prized arms.

The Mets ultimately lost last night to the Miami Marlins 8-1, as the Fish won on the backs of lefty Adam Conley‘s five solid innings and a total of 13 hits from the Marlins’ lineup, including a Marcell Ozuna towering home run.

And that was the only run that would be had by the Mets’ lineup last night — a Lucas Duda solo shot.

The secondary storyline of the night was the rather average first start of 2017 for last year’s “Replace-Mets” ace Robert Gsellman, after he made his first Opening Day roster just a week ago.

The long-haired righty took the loss, throwing five innings, during which he allowed three runs on six hits and two walks, while striking out seven.

The bullpen struggled again last night, as the combined work of Josh Smoker, Hansel Robles, Paul Sewald, Jerry Blevins, Rafael Montero and Fernando Salas led to five earned runs allowed in the four innings following Gsellman’s departure — a slump that drew any chances of a Mets comeback swiftly away.

Wilmer Flores had an error on the night, along with a Gsellman wild pitch — two statistics emblematic of a larger team-fielding issue that has carried over into this Mets season.
