Giants QB Jaxson Dart’s season now in doubt

When Joe Schoen told ESPN that Jaxson Dart was “going to be OK,” he was technically right.

After all, Giants coach John Harbaugh did confirm the quarterback’s knee injury was not “life-threatening” following Monday’s 28-6 loss at the Rams.

But sideline reporter Laura Rutledge was not asking about Dart’s mortal existence. She was inquiring about his availability to play. And on that, the general manager appears to have been wrong.

Dart could be facing season-ending surgery, according to the NFL scoop brigade, after an MRI determined his injury is worse than initially believed.

In other words: Not the “really good news” Harbaugh thought he had received a few hours earlier.

“Evaluations are ongoing,” the somber coach told the Big Blue press corps on Tuesday. “We haven’t got any final decisions yet. We’ve learned a lot more. I really wouldn’t want to share too much until decisions get made. And that takes more than one person. It takes everybody involved. When we know what direction we’re going to have to go or whatever it may be, we’ll announce that. But we don’t have that yet, so I don’t want to get out over our skis on that.”

Translation: It is, in fact, not OK. It’s actually really bad news.

Now the Giants turn to veteran Jameis Winston — one of the league’s top backup quarterbacks, but also a guy who did a Jake Fromm impression (remember him?) when pressed into duty against the Rams. He and Dart are the only two passers on the active roster, but Jake Haener is on the practice squad. The Giants also had veteran Brandon Allen with the team in training camp and he reportedly may be on the way back.
