New York Mets first baseman Pete Alonso has been named this past week’s National League Player of the Week.

Rookie first baseman Pete Alonso keeps doing great things for the New York Mets. Despite a tough road trip this past week that saw the Mets go 3-4 in seven games, Alonso was named the National League Player of the Week.

In a three-game series against the Atlanta Braves and a four-game series against the Chicago Cubs, Alonso hit .417 with eight RBI and four home runs. He also scored seven runs for the Mets.

This brought his full-season totals to .276 with 27 home runs and 61 RBI. His 27th home run on Sunday broke Darryl Strawberry‘s Mets record for most rookie-seasons home runs.

Despite having one of the top bats in the National League this year in Alonso, they’ve been struggling for the most part. They find themselves currently at fourth in the NL East division, starting at a record of 37-41.

This past week saw them lose two-out-of-three against the Braves in which they were outscored 21-15. They then split the series against the Cubs, however, could’ve won three-out-of-four easily. Reliever Seth Lugo allowed a three-run home run in the bottom of the eighth inning which put the Cubs up 5-3. That eventually became the final score.

New York won’t return to Citi Field until Friday when they face the Braves. Their current four-game series in Philadelphia finishes out the 11-game road trip.
