After the New York Mets dropped their suspended game from Thursday, Pete Alonso had a fiery response for his Twitter critics.

New York Mets fans must protect Pete Alonso at all costs. The rookie is one of the best power hitters in all of baseball and on Thursday night, he convinced the umpires to let the Mets play out the top of the ninth inning despite a little rain.

Unfortunately, it backfired on the Mets and the St. Louis Cardinals knocked in two runs against the inconsistent Edwin Diaz before the game was suspended in the bottom of the ninth. The closer pitched the 10th inning on Friday and gave up the game-winning run.

One die-hard Mets fan, KFC of Barstool Sports, took to Twitter to express his anger with Alonso. Even though the first baseman was prepping for the Mets’ regularly scheduled game in less than an hour, he responded with some fire.

You have to love Alonso’s competitive edge. All this guy wants to do is play baseball. Check that, all he wants to do is win. The Mets might not have the horses in the bullpen to really compete for a World Series this season.

However, with Alonso firmly slotted into the middle of the order, the Mets are clearly on the right path forward. It’s still too early to say, but Alonso’s rookie year is eerily similar to Aaron Judge‘s breakout rookie season.

On June 14 of Judge’s rookie season, he had 22 home runs and 49 RBI. Through June 14 of Alonso’s rookie season, he has 22 home runs and 49 RBI.
