Luke Voit took the New York Yankees by storm in 2018 and he’s off to a great start on Opening Day with a three-run bomb in the first inning.
Luke Voit is on a mission to prove 2018 was not a fluke.
He did just like that in his first at-bat of 2019, crushing a 3-1 breaking ball over the wall in center for an early 3-0 New York Yankees lead.
The inning all started with two hard-hit singles to the opposite field by Aaron Judge and Giancarlo Stanton. Voit came up and all he really had to do was hit a fly ball deep enough to drive Judge in after he advanced to third on Stanton’s single. But Voit had more damage in mind, giving Opening Day starter Masahiro Tanaka plenty of run support.
Voit entered 2019 in a competition with Greg Bird for the starting first base job but started at the DH position on Opening Day with Aaron Hicks on the injured list. Many are speculating Bird at first meant he had won that competition but Voit still had the last laugh.
The Yankees hit 267 home runs in 2018 and feel they can break that record with all of the firepower this lineup possesses. The perfect example of this is Miguel Andujar hitting one all the way to warning track a batter later.
New York would end up sending seven batters to the plate in the first inning, two of them striking out. But that really does not matter thanks to Luke Voit and the absolute bomb of a home run.
The Yankees lead the Orioles 3-0 in the top of the third inning.
