Sports radio legend Mike Francesa rips the New York Giants and the “Kansas City model” approach for getting a new quarterback.

Many people are looking forward to the New York Giants following the “Kansas City model.”. This, of course, refers to what the Kansas City Chiefs did with QB Pat Mahomes.

The Chiefs drafted Mahomes in the first round of the 2017 NFL Draft and sat him for his rookie season behind QB Alex Smith. Once the offseason rolled around, the Chiefs traded Smith and gave Mahomes the opportunity to be in the driver’s seat.

Mahomes then went on to throw 50 touchdowns in 2018 and win NFL MVP honors.

Big Blue potentially has the opportunity to follow that route. HC Pat Shurmur recently spoke at the NFL Scouting Combine and said he “expects” QB Eli Manning to be back in 2019.

The Giants also have the No. 6 overall pick in the draft and could take Ohio State QB Dwayne Haskins. Therefore, Haskins could get the Mahomes mold and be ready to take over for 2020.

However, sports radio host Mike Francesa doesn’t believe in this specific approach.

“Taking the No. 6 pick and spending it on a quarterback who is going to sit behind Eli, he’s not helping the team at all,” Francesa said on his WFAN radio show. “If you are doing that then get rid of the quarterback. You can’t have it both ways. You are just going to prove your dumb again. Take another dumb approach. (Instead) get back to being the Giants.”

Francesa is known for saying some wild things on his show and you can add this to the list.

The Giants retaining Manning for 2019 and drafting a quarterback as well to be mentored by him is the best route to go. It’s that simple.

Despite whatever your opinion of Manning is, he would be a great mentor for a young quarterback and would set the Giants up for a bright future.
