While Day 1 of the MLB Winter Meetings in Las Vegas, NV was basically all talk, the New York Mets and New York Yankees were still involved.
Can’t be in Las Vegas for the annual meeting of the great baseball minds this week? Have no fear. Elite Sports NY has you covered on all things New York baseball.
Both the New York Yankees and the New York Mets entered Monday hoping to make a splash this offseason but in order to get that big trade, they’ll just have to wait for another day.
Day 1 was full of rumors and talk surrounding coveted free agents. Here’s what our favorite teams have been up to so far.
New York Yankees Talk
The Bombers might have lost out on Patrick Corbin early on in the offseason but they are pulling out the big guns to try and get some trades done this week.
The first would have to be regarding Sonny Gray, the former Oakland A’s starter who was supposed to fill a rotation hole for the Bombers. However, Gray’s time in the Bronx has been far from sunny.
According to Joel Sherman of The New York Post, the Yankees are looking to trade Gray but not without getting someone of extreme value in return.
#Yankees shooting high with Sonny Gray, asked #Reds about 1 of top prospects, OF Taylor Trammell, which was a no go. Sign NYY can get something good for Gray or that they simply or asking high before settling low, Could also always partner with a prospect to get more.

But that isn’t the only major news to break from a Yankees standpoint. Brian Cashman also broke the hearts of Yankees fans when he made a stunning announcement regarding Bryce Harper.
Brian Cashman indicated that Bryce Harper isn’t a fit for the #Yankees. Said the team already has six outfielders and that playing Harper at first base isn’t realistic.

Just because the Yankees have six outfielders, two of them who are on the wrong side of 30, doesn’t mean that Bryce Harper can’t be a solid option for them. But that’s a story for another time.
So what about Manny Machado? That’s a name the Yankees will likely pursue this offseason and it sounds like that has been picking up just in time.
Cashman said that he has talked more than once with Manny Machado’s agent, Dan Lozano.

While a report from yesterday stated that the Yankees were unwilling to pay Machado what he’s seeking financially, it sounds like they’re still willing to work something out for the talented infielder.
New York Mets talk
So what about the big name in their trade talks? It seems that the Mets will still be looking at J.T. Realmuto for a top-tier catcher for years to come.
Luckily, according to Joel Sherman, the asking price has been slightly lowered, which spells great news for the Mets.
Hear #Marlins have slightly lowered return request on Realmuto since end of the season. Outside execs say they perceive Mia knows have to deal him but after getting not enough last year, esp for Yelich, gunshy to go quickly and undersell.
— Joel Sherman (@Joelsherman1) December 10, 2018
#Mets remain in on Realmuto because Van Wagenen determined that his version of NYM always pursue best players. But internally still see as a long shot. Someone like Martin Maldonado remains more likely to emphasize defense.

Besides that, the Mets haven’t been emphasized too much in these Winter Meetings. And while the Yankees are out on Harper, it seems that the other team in New York doesn’t even have him on their radar.
I checked to be sure, no indication as of now that Mets will be among the teams to meet with Bryce Harper here.

Well, hopefully, the Mets pick up the talks as the week goes on and leave the Winter Meetings with some positive talk. Because right now, the Yankees are winning in the headlines. But, that’s nothing unusual.
