The only logical explanation for the New York Jets starting Bryce Petty is that they don’t like him as a Quarterback.
The New York Jets can tell you all they want that they think Ryan Fitzpatrick is the best option at the QB position, but this seems to show their true feelings on Bryce Petty more so than their feelings on Fitz.
Fitz has been bad this year, there’s no other way to put it. The only reason they went to Petty against the Rams was due to injury. Fitzpatrick wasn’t ready to go so they gave Petty his first NFL action.
This isn’t the first time we’ve seen the Jets show their distaste for Petty, which is why it seems so obvious that they don’t think he’s the guy.
The Jets drafted Bryce Petty in the fourth round of the 2015 season. They went into the year with Geno Smith as the starter with Fitzpatrick as the veteran backup and Petty was a project.
The thought being that Geno would be the QB and that the grooming process for the next franchise QB would begin with Petty.
Not even a year later the Jets drafted another QB, Christian Hackenberg in round two. Right there showed the first inkling that the Jets didn’t believe that Petty was their guy for the future.
Fast forward to the present where Bryce Petty is coming off his first NFL start and he is replaced for arguably the worst starting QB in the NFL this season.
Petty wasn’t great in his start against the Rams but he wasn’t awful either. He showed signs of being halfway decent but the Jets conservative play calling didn’t allow for us to truly see what he has.
Ultimately, at 3-7, you have to see what you have out of Petty and the Jets aren’t even giving him a chance. Could he be worse than what Fitzpatrick was for the Jets through nine games?
This one didn’t make too much sense, it seems apparent that Petty has been deemed not the future. Is Hackenberg the future? The guy barely got any action in the preseason and hasn’t dressed for a game yet this year.
It doesn’t seem likely that either Ryan Fitzpatrick or Geno Smith will return next year. Wouldn’t it make since to start one if not both of the QB’s who will be on your roster for sure next year?
Then again, when have the Jets ever done anything that’s made sense?
