In a must-win situation, the New York Mets scratch the start of pitcher Steven Matz.
It just keeps getting worse for the poor New York Mets.
Steven Matz, who was scheduled start tonight vs the San Francisco Giants, was scratched due to shoulder discomfort.
According to ESPN’s Adam Rubin, Matz says he’s feeling “discomfort,” but he also doesn’t feel the injury is serious – as he hopes to make his next start.
He seems to have felt the discomfort in his shoulder while throwing off flat ground earlier in the week, which forced him to miss out on his bullpen session.
In place of Matz, Seth Lugo will get the start instead.
Lugo, who will be making his first career big league start, has pitched to a 2.65 ERA in 17 innings this season out of the bullpen.
New York currently sits a game under .500 at the moment, and 4.5 games back for the second Wildcard spot.
