One of the more necessary jobs an NFL front office is tasked with each August is taking a 75-man preseason roster and cutting it down to just 53.
While 53 seems like a large number in itself, taking into consideration that there are 11 starters on each side of the ball, a kicker, a punter, and a long-snapper makes a total of 25 right off the bat complicates things. Add in anywhere from five to eight players for sub-packages on both sides and room becomes slim.
Mike Maccagnan and Todd Bowles are learning this as we speak with their New York Jets.
The first year general manager and head coach have made their first big-time cut in their careers. On Sunday there were forced to have 12 of those very tough conversations that most likely dealt with the phrase “we decided to go in another direction.”
Among the 12 cuts were former Houston Texans wide receiver DeVier Posey.
