The day has finally come that New York Mets fans have been dreading. Yoenis Cespedes has officially opted out of his contract.
New York Mets star outfielder Yoenis Cespedes has officially opted out of his recently signed contract on Saturday, which leaves him electing to become a free agent once again. The right-handed slugger will be leaving $47.5 million over two years guaranteed on the table as he is looking for more of a long-term deal.
The move should not come as a shock to fans of the boys from Queens. Cespedes opting out has been in all of the rumors within the past week or so but the decision just became official on Saturday.
In 2016, Cespedes provided New York with a key offensive presence in their lineup that will be tough to replace if he decides not to resign. The all-star sported a slash line of .280/.354/.530 with 31 home runs and 86 RBIs.
It will be a tough decision for the Mets front office whether or not they decide to resign the Cuban slugger, who has had his moments of minimal effort on the field as well as some injury concerns. The Yoenis Cespedes saga will surely be a key storyline in free agency this offseason.
