Former New York Red Bulls star striker, Thierry Henry, joined Montreal Impact as a head coach, the MLS club he scored the most against.
“It’s an honor to coach the Montreal Impact and return to MLS,” former New York Red Bulls superstar Thierry Henry said, via the Impact’s website on Thursday, the day they announced his arrival.
“It’s a league I know well, in which I had some very nice moments.”
A lot of these “very nice moments” came against his new team. Montreal was the club Henry scored on the most and had his only MLS hat trick against as a Red Bull player.
He was on target every time he played against the Canadian side, tallying nine goals in five matches.
The 42-year-old wasn’t only a prolific scorer against Montreal, he also had a knack for sending his teammates on goal versus them. Henry provided four assists in five outings against the Impact.
After joining Montreal, the former striker revealed that he always had his radar on the club and is fond of Quebec.
“To be in Quebec, in Montreal, which has an enormous multicultural heritage, it’s extraordinary. I’ve always kept an eye on the club and now I’m here,” Henry said.
Earlier this year in April, many RBNY fans thought their former star player was in the process of becoming their team’s coach because of a rumor from Sky Sports.
Henry later stated that this rumor was false.
The European signed with the Red Bulls in 2010 after a remarkable career in which he notably marked himself as Arsenal F.C.’s all-time leading top scorer.
He was RBNY’s first-ever superstar from Europe. Henry stayed with the club for four years, racking 52 goals and 42 assists in 153 MLS matches.
The Arsenal legend helped New York win their first Supporters’ Shield in 2013.
Now, he’ll be going against them from the sideline. Montreal versus New York definitely won’t be a quiet fixture next season.
