New York Yankees southpaw Jordan Montgomery is “getting close to game action,” meaning help is on the way.

It’s no secret: the New York Yankees have been ravaged by injuries this season. Still, the team continues to dominate (81-41 at time of publication) any and all opponents (but especially the Orioles).

Now, the Yankees may be getting a familiar face back soon.

According to The Athletic’s Lindsay Adler, skipper Aaron Boone reported that Jordan Montgomery threw a simulated game and is “getting close to game action.”

Montgomery, a fourth-round pick in 2014, has not seen game action since injuring his elbow in May 2018 and subsequently undergoing Tommy John surgery.

Montgomery was expected to return earlier this summer, but suffered a setback when he felt shoulder soreness during a mound session in June.

In his first mound appearance since the shoulder scare, Montgomery threw 35 pitches across two innings, per Bryan Hoch of MLB.com.

Montgomery enjoyed a successful rookie campaign in 2017, finishing 9-7 with a 3.88 ERA in 155.1 innings. Before the injury in 2018, Montgomery pitched to a 3.62 ERA in 27.1 innings.

Despite the recent news, Boone was unable to commit to Montgomery pitching in the majors this season.
