New York Giants wide receiver Sterling Shepard suffered a fractured thumb in Thursday’s training camp practice.
The New York Giants had their first full-team training camp practice on Thursday. They held it at the Questi Diagnostics Training Center in East Rutherford, NJ, per usual.
Despite a great day for the players, coaches, and fans, wide receiver Sterling Shepard had to depart halfway through practice.
Having gone for a pass, Shepard came away holding his left thumb. He thus went for x-rays, and the Giants now report that Shepard indeed has a fractured thumb.

The X-ray on Sterling Shepard’s thumb revealed a fracture. Shepard will be evaluated on a week-to-week basis.

The timetable for return is not set yet. Nonetheless, it isn’t great news for the Giants, to say the least.
Going into year No. 4, Shepard has a new role and a new contract. The latter comes in the form of a four-year, $41 million extension, signed in April. The former comes from the trade of Odell Beckham Jr. in March. The Giants shipped Beckham to the Cleveland Browns for a first-round pick (No. 17), a third-round pick (No. 95), and safety Jabrill Peppers.
That being said, the Giants are looking for Shepard to be their No. 1 receiver and Eli Manning’s No. 1 target in 2019. Big Blue also signed receiver Golden Tate to a four-year, $37.5 million deal in March to complement Shepard within the air attack.
The Giants had rookies report to camp on Monday of this week. Veterans reported on Wednesday. Thursday marks two weeks until the Giants’ first preseason game. They’ll take on the New York Jets at MetLife Stadium on Aug. 8.
