New York Jets great Wayne Chrebet calls the recent mega-signing of free agent running back Le’Veon Bell a “power move.”
A power move.
Wayne Chrebet, one of the fondest New York Jets employees of all-time, is chiming in on the recent mega-signing that is stud back Le’Veon Bell, per Randy Lange of the organization’s official website.
“It was like Christmas morning when everybody woke up the other day and saw on their texts or on social media that we got Le’Veon,” said Wayne Chrebet, the Jets’ Ring of Honor wideout from 1995-2005 who was visiting the team facility on Friday. “He’s a great addition. I think they’ve done a great job filling some of these needs. Hopefully, he can have the same kind of career coming here that Curtis had.”
For a great percentage of Jets fandom, it does feel like Christmas morning. For others, it’s a curious move considering the value of the running back position, Bell’s notorious unreliability, and his age.
Bell, 27, has missed an incredible 2.125 seasons of a possible six. When taking out his “business decision” of 2018, he’s still managed to miss 1.125 seasons of a possible five.
There’s little doubt he’s, arguably, the most talented back in the league. At least he was the last time we saw him back in 2017 when he racked up 1,291 yards and nine touchdowns on the ground (4.0 yards per carry) to go along with 655 yards and two scores through the air on 85 receptions.
Chrebet, the man whose jersey never seems to die within a sea of Sunday green, is taking in the overwhelming positives.
“Guys like Le’Veon don’t become available every day. He was the prize of free agency,” Chrebet said. “Especially with a young quarterback in Sam Darnold, you want a guy that you can not only give the ball to but who can catch passes. I saw in 2017 he had the most touches in the league. They say running backs get old early, but he’s had a whole year to get fresh.
“It’s a power move by Mike and Adam.”
In addition to the All-Pro back, Chrebet called out the signings of C.J. Mosley and Jamison Crowder to go along with the acquisition of guard Kelechi Osemele.
Edge is what he believes the organization is targeting next. This means the No. 3 overall pick in the 2019 NFL Draft is the setting.
“We have the third pick of the draft, and I think the draft is so deep that even if you move back you can still get an impact guy. There’s a handful of edge rushers and that’s what we need.
“I trust Mike and Adam and what they’re doing. They’ve done great so far. I’m excited to see what they do next.”
The Garfield, New Jersey native racked up 7,365 yards and 41 touchdowns on 580 career receptions, all for the New York Jets.
