St. John’s women’s basketball picked up a big win over #8 Marquette, dealing the Golden Eagles their first loss against an unranked opponent.
On Friday night, the Golden Eagles once again felt the wrath of the Red Storm.
Sophomore guard Tiana England led the way with 20 points, while junior and fellow guard Alisha Kebbe had 17 points and six rebounds, as the St. John’s women’s basketball team topped No. 8 Marquette 81-74.
The win comes ten days after their male counterparts likewise beat a Marquette team ranked in the top ten.

“I couldn’t be happier with our performance. This is, in my head coaching career, one of the biggest wins we’ve had at Carnesecca Arena,” Red Storm head coach Joe Tartamella told RedStormSports.com. “As I told our team in the locker room, as far as playing a top-10 team, being able to compete the way we did. I could not be more proud of them.”
Winners of four in a row, St. John’s (13-12, 6-8 Big East) trailed by 10 after the first quarter. Marquette slightly inflated the lead to 14 in the second, but the Red Storm chipped away, biding their time until the fourth.
A three-pointer from Jasmine Sina, off an England helper, just past the final frame’s midway point gave the Red Storm the lead for good and capped off a crucial 7-0 run. They would outscore Marquette 49-37 in the second half.

The victory is St. John’s first over a ranked opponent since topping then-#18 DePaul in March 2016’s Big East tournament. Carnesecca Arena had not seen such a win since January of that season, defeating #25 Seton Hall.
This win also comes just short of the seven-year anniversary of the Red Storm’s historic road win over a second-ranked Connecticut squad.
Marquette (21-4, 12-1 Big East) dropped their first Big East game of the season. Their 18-game regular-season winning streak in conference play also ends. Senior forward Erika Davenport had a double-double in defeat, tallying 24 points and 13 rebounds.
The Red Storm will have another chance to make another statement on Sunday afternoon. They’ll make a trip to Madison Square Garden to battle DePaul (1:00 p.m. ET, FS2), part of a St. John’s doubleheader in Manhattan. The men will take on #13 Villanova after the conclusion.
