New York Giants head coach Pat Shurmur has reached out to former running back Tiki Barber to repair his relationship with the organization.
Although Tiki Barber is the leading rusher in New York Giants history, he’s not exactly the most-liked by fans.
Since retiring after the 2006 season, the former running back has showcased rocky relationships in many areas. Ups-and-downs with former head coach Tom Coughlin and still-current quarterback Eli Manning have caused Barber to be booed at some events.
However, newly-hired head coach Pat Shurmur is looking to change that.
According to Paul Schwartz of the New York Post, when Shurmur was hired earlier this year, he reached out to numerous past Giants players. Barber was included in this group of players.
“We had a great conversation,” Barber told Schwartz. “I was taken by how calm he is and how measured and thoughtful he is, which resonates really well with me, because that’s how I am.’’
Shurmur being able to bring Barber back into the Giants’ fold would be a great move in all ways. Not only has Barber had rocky relationships with a few Giants, but he’s had other problems as well.
He went through a very publicized divorce with former wife Cha in 2010. This led to Tiki bouncing around from job to job in different media outlets.
However, being brought back into the Giants family will help him gain a better image in the public eye, and with the team that he did so much for.
“I appreciate the fact he cared to reach out,’’ Barber mentioned to Schwartz. “It was kind of cool. Like a new relationship that was developing and I’m looking forward to furthering it.’’
People can already see the improvement from that phone call. Barber was recently cheered when his name was announced at the Landon Collins Celebrity Softball Game earlier in June.
