Recent news from the Staten Island Yankees has added to Minor League Baseball’s sterling reputation for doing ridiculous, outside-the-box promotions.
While going to an MLB game is an incredibly fun experience, there are plenty of people happy to argue that Minor League Baseball is better. You still get to watch professional baseball and won’t go broke during a night at the ballpark with the family, which are both pluses.
The hilarious promotions teams agree to doing is just icing on the cake. The Staten Island Yankees aren’t immune to these publicity stunts, either. For every Saturday home game during the 2018 season (which spans just five games, mind you), they’ll be known as the Staten Island Pizza Rats.
Seriously.
Should we even be surprised anymore by things like this? I thought this was a permanent name change upon first hearing the news in passing. That would’ve been way better, if we’re being honest.
These logos look pretty awesome, though, and it seems like the initial fan reaction is in agreement. Upon looking at the response to the above tweet, a consistent question from people focused on whether or not they could buy some Pizza Rats merchandise from the team store.
Anyone with a love for collecting hats would have the best collection in the history of the world if they exclusively pursued minor-league hats.
It didn’t take very long for Staten Island’s new gear to start making its way to the fans, either. Just hours after making this announcement, the team’s official Twitter account said this:
First shipment of Staten Island Pizza Rats orders are out for delivery! Get yours while it’s hot!?? #SIPizzaRats #JoinThePack https://t.co/cGcE9d41Ji pic.twitter.com/60cg4aQigF

At the very, very least, wearing a hat or shirt with the Pizza Rats logo is a conversation starter.
While this stuff seems awesome and it looks like the majority of minor-league baseball fans are also on board, it’s hard to not think about what the players are thinking. You know, the guys who are actually forced to wear these uniforms.
With the grind that is minor league baseball, one can hope these things provide them with a few chuckles along the way.
