MLB Names New York Yankees’ Gleyber Torres As Baseball’s Top Prospect

The hype surrounding Gleyber Torres of the New York Yankees has reached a whole new level, as MLB named him baseball’s best overall prospect.

Being the top prospect in the highly touted New York Yankees‘ farm system is one thing. But to top the list of Major League Baseball’s Top-100 prospects lists is a whole new level of hype and Gleyber Torres has reached it.

The sport’s former top prospect, New York Mets’ infielder Amed Rosario, graduated from his prospect status and made the first spot vacant for Torres, who came to the Yankees as the headliner in the Aroldis Chapman deal with the Chicago Cubs last July, to take over.

Torres finished his first year with New York in the Arizona Fall League, where he became the youngest MVP and batting champion (.403) in the league’s 25-season history at 19-years-old. In 2017, he advanced quickly to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre before being shut down after a left elbow in a play at the plate required Tommy John in June.

Although the procedure to repair a torn UCL is tricky and the timetable is a long one, Torres will return by Spring Training and could even make a run at being the starting third baseman for the 2018 Yankees.

Time will certainly tell but, at the very least, Gleyber Torres’ ceiling is considered by MLB Pipeline to be one of the highest in the sport. Watch out.
