New York Yankees Announce First Wave Of Call-Ups
As the Major League rosters expand from 25 to 40 men, the New York Yankees announced their first wave of September call-ups.
The New York Yankees announced their first wave of 40-man call ups as the rosters expanded on Friday and called up five players from the minor leagues.
Matt Holliday (back) was reinstated from the 10-day disabled list, Ben Heller, Bryan Mitchell and Jordan Montgomery were recalled from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre and Erik Kratz was signed to a major league contract.
[sc name=”Yankees Center” ]Nothing is surprising, by any means. Holliday, who has been on the DL since August 5, was expected to make his return when the rosters expanded and no sooner. Mitchell and Montgomery will be utilized for long-relief duties. Kratz will serve as the third catcher as the suspensions of Gary Sanchez and Austin Romine loom.
These are, of course, merely the first wave of call-ups this month. When the Triple-A playoffs come to a close, you’ll start seeing more prominent minor league names such as Miguel Andujar, Domingo German, Tyler Austin and others receive a brief stint in New York.
The Yankees will likely carry 30-35 players with them but are fairly aggressive with their usage. Whether it’s pinch-runners in big spots or big at-bats, expect some Baby Bombers to get a quality look this fall.
