San Francisco 49ers cornerback Richard Sherman gives his take on Baker Mayfield’s past comments of New York Giants quarterback Daniel Jones.

On Monday night, the San Francisco 49ers improved their record to an astounding 4-0, a start to the 2019 season that some didn’t see coming. The Niners ultimately defeated the Baker Mayfield-led Cleveland Browns by a score of 31-3.

During the game, there was an extra chip on 49ers cornerback Richard Sherman’s shoulder when it came to Mayfield. It stemmed from a pregame handshake snub from Mayfield himself.

After the game, Sherman took it upon himself to cite situations where the young quarterback criticized other players. This includes Mayfield commenting on the New York Giants selecting Daniel Jones No. 6 overall in a GQ article by Clay Skipper. Mayfield was quoted as saying, “I cannot believe the Giants took Daniel Jones … blows my mind.”

Now, Sherman responds.

“There’s no reason for him to say and do those things, especially given how little he’s accomplished,” Sherman said of the 24-year-old Cleveland quarterback, per Michael Silver of nfl.com. “That’s where he’s gonna have to grow up. He might get there, but he has a long way to go.”

Mayfield eventually revealed he contacted Jones to clear the air after that story broke, having got his number through a mutual friend.

Sherman and the Niners defense surely dominated Mayfield and the Browns offense. Mayfield was only 8-for-22 through the air with 100 yards, zero touchdowns, and two interceptions. He also lost a fumble.

Former Giants receiver Odell Beckham Jr. only had two receptions for 27 yards on the night, also losing a fumble on a punt return in the fourth quarter. Cleveland’s office gained just 180 yards.

Mayfield and the Browns have fallen to 2-3 on the still-young 2019 season.
