Gary Sanchez is the latest in a long line of New York Yankees injuries. Kyle Higashioka is on his way up to fill the void.

This is going from bad to worse to downright unbelievable. The New York Yankees are sending another star to the Injured List. Red hot Gary Sanchez is off to the 10-day IL according to the Yankees PR team.

Kyle Higashioka will come up from Triple-A to back up Austin Romine for the time being. This is nothing new for Higashioka. He played 29 games for the Yankees in 2018 while Sanchez struggled through injuries.

Sanchez has been dealing with a left calf strain and will join Dellin Betances, Luis Severino, Troy Tulowitzki, Giancarlo Stanton, Aaron Hicks, Miguel Andujar, Jordan Montgomery, and Didi Gregorius on the shelf. More than half of New York’s starting lineup is now on the IL.

Of course, this is a major blow to the Yankee offense. The right-handed bat has already belted six home runs and drove in 11 RBI in 2019. He’s slashing .268/.333/.732 and looks poised to wipe away his ghastly 2018 season.

It feels incredibly trite to write, but the team’s depth will be seriously tested in the coming weeks. Pick whatever cliche you’d like to fit the current situation: next-man-up mentality, one game at a time, close to turning a corner.

Things aren’t great in the Bronx, but the good news is that the Boston Red Sox are off to a poor start as well. They aren’t dealing with a myriad of injury issues like the Yankees, but they are still in last place in the AL East.
