After placing Giancarlo Stanton on the IL, the New York Yankees received more bad news, losing Miguel Andujar to a shoulder injury.

The New York Yankees will place Miguel Andujar on the injured list with a shoulder injury according to the YES Network’s Jack Curry.

Andujar hurt himself diving back into third on a pickoff attempt from Baltimore Orioles catcher Pedro Severino Sunday afternoon. The news also comes the same day New York placed slugger Giancarlo Stanton on the IL, making what fans hoped was just a bad April Fools’ joke.

Unfortunately for New York,  this is not a joke, and Andujar is, in fact, heading to the IL.

The injury answers the question of why DJ LeMahieu was starting in place of Andujar with New York in need of offensive pop with Stanton down. LeMahieu and newly recalled Tyler Wade will fill on at third for the Yankees.

The sophomore third baseman is supposed to be a major part of this Yankee lineup. He burst onto the scene in 2018 hitting a team-high .297, belting 27 home runs and driving in 97 RBI. Now, the Yankees are going to have to find a way to replace his offense.

Andujar joins Stanton, Didi Gregorius, Aaron Hicks, Luis Severino, Dellin Betances, and CC Sabathia as some of the key players New York will be without for the majority of the first month of the young season. The good news is that the injuries are happening now and not in September, but as Joe Girardi would always say “it’s not what you want” to start a season.

The Yankees begin a three-game series against the Detroit Tigers Monday night and will have to do it now without Andujar for the foreseeable future.
