New York Yankees erupt for pair of home runs in 5th (Video)

The New York Yankees erupted in a big fifth inning thanks to two long balls, giving them their first lead of the night.

Just as it looked like the New York Yankees and Seattle Mariners were in a pitchers’ duel, the Bronx Bombers lived up to their nickname.

It all started with Miguel Andujar, who had been struggling over the last few games. Andujar took a 2-2 curveball and absolutely crushed it into the seats in left field, giving the Yankees their first lead of the night.

In Andujar’s last seven games, he had been slashing a .083 batting average only getting two hits in 24 at-bats. With Andujar starting to struggle, some were wondering whether or not Brandon Drury, who has been hot in Triple-A, would get a crack in the major league roster.

But the Yankees have stuck with Andujar and he delivered tonight with his ninth home run on the season, along with adding a hard hit single in his next at-bat.

That wasn’t all the Yankees were able to do in the fifth, as two batters later Aaron Hicks would hit one out to right-center field extending the Yanks lead to 5-1.

Hicks has been starting to turn his season around over the last week despite his .222 batting average in his last seven games. He has now homered in three consecutive games.

Now he has 10 home runs on the season while continuing to play solid defense out in center field. With Clint Frazier back on the 25-man roster, you kind of have to wonder if Hicks is feeling pressure to perform and keep his roster spot.

Thanks to those two home runs, the Yankees are up on top in the bottom of the seventh inning. They lead it 5-2 and are threatening for more with Domingo German in search of his second career win.
