The New York Yankees are going to be active at the trade deadline, but Brian Cashman wanted to set the record straight on Gleyber Torres.

The New York Yankees need to get a starting pitcher to bolster their rotation heading into the stretch run and hopefully the postseason. Brian Cashman knows this as well as anyone. But he also knows that Yankee fans will be ready to riot if he includes Gleyber Torres in any trade deals.

According to Marc Carig of The Athletic, when asked about Torres’ trade status, Cashman gave a look to reporters and mentioned that he still has to walk around in New York.

This is a pretty clear signal from the front office that the newest Baby Bomber is here to stay. It would be foolish to trade Torres after how well he’s played in his young career. Torres is far too valuable to give up mere months into his major league career, even for a top flight starter like a Jacob deGrom.

With Shohei Ohtani’s unfortunate injury, Torres looks to be the odds-on favorite for the AL Rookie of the Year. Right now, his biggest competition is his Yankees compadre, Miguel Andujar.

Heading into Friday night’s game, Torres accrued 13 home runs and 33 RBI with a slash line of .295/.351/.577. That puts Torres’ OPS at an eye-popping .928. To put that in perspective, Aaron Judge finished his historic rookie season with an OPS of 1.049. Torres isn’t quite putting up Judgian numbers, but he’s nipping at his tail.

Torres is showing all the signs of a future superstar. Cashman and the Yankees fleeced the Cubs into parting with Torres for Chapman back in 2016. The Yankees don’t want to be on the wrong end of a deal like that, so don’t expect Torres to be on the trade block anytime soon.
