Coming off a disappointing loss, Jim Boeheim’s Syracuse Orange came up large with a big victory against Georgia Tech.
The Syracuse Orange defeated the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets 90-61 on Saturday behind a career-high 40 points from Andrew White and 22 from Tyus Battle.Just 13 days ago, when these two teams last met at McCamish Pavilion, Syracuse lost 71-65 to Georgia Tech. This game was a crucial one for both sides, who are fighting for a spot in the big dance.
This game went Syracuse’s way from the get go. The Orange started out shooting 6-7 and were quickly up 16-4 against a strong Yellow Jackets defense after a three from Taurean Thompson. Syracuse let Georgia Tech back into the game, but still managed to find themselves up 12 at the half.
The early stages of the second half saw Georgia Tech turn a 38-26 deficit to just 39-33. A three-pointer from Quinton Stephens and a layup from Josh Okogie quickly shifted the momentum.
However, this comeback attempt was quickly forgotten about thanks to a monstrous second half from Andrew White. White hit four three-pointers in under four minutes and finished the game with eight, all in the second half. White had been relatively quiet in recent games, but senior day brought out the best in him. His 40 points on a tremendous 12-of-16 shooting led Syracuse to the 29-point victory. Tyus Battle and John Gillon both hit clutch shots down the stretch to secure the victory.
The Orange clinched a first-round bye in the ACC tournament with the win and will play Miami in their next game at the Barclays Center next Wednesday.
