The New York Yankees have claimed left-handed reliever Joe Mantiply off waivers from the Detroit Tigers.
According to the New York Yankees’ PR Department, New York has claimed left-handed reliever Joe Mantiply off waivers from the Detroit Tigers.
Mantiply, who was drafted in the 27th round of the 2013 June Amateur Draft from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, surrendered five earned runs (one home run) in 2.2 innings with the big league club in 2016.
Over four years in the minor leagues, the lefty maintained a 2.44 earned run average over 154 games and 13 starts. Mantiply only gave up 11 home runs in 239.1 innings and struck out 8.9 batters per nine innings.
In addition to this roster move, the Yankees have also designated Branden Pinder for assignment. After an impressive 2015 season, the righty missed most of last season with a partially torn UCL.
Although a small roster move, it’s evident that Mantiply will be in the running to earn a middle relief role on the major league squad during Spring Training.
