Although Sunday started off exciting for the New York Jets, it turned out to be Tom Brady’s efficiency that wound up killing them.

If you play with fire against Tom Brady, you’ll eventually get burned. This is what Todd Bowles learned during his first matchup against the future Hall of Fame quarterback as head coach of the New York Jets.
Far too often the Jets defense sent seven defenders at Brady resulting in too many one-on-one matchups that were too tough to stop. The final dagger came in the form of Rob Gronkowski, who was left uncovered on an all-out blitz.
That TD made the score 30-20 with a little over a minute left in the game. Only a late Nick Folk field goal made the score a one possession difference.

New England ran the ball nine times for a grand total of 16 yards. Brady accounted for 15 of those yards on 4 attempts. It didn’t matter. Brady’s short, well-timed passes turned out to be the difference against a Jets defense who didn’t have answers after an early terrific start.
Offensively, the Jets did a poor job. It was obvious Bill Belichick wanted to shut down the Jets running game on first down. He loaded the box early and often. Early on Chan Gailey surely did respond with a number of passes which Fitzpatrick converted on.
Eventually though, New England played better situational ball than New York did. Brady and Josh McDaniels did just enough to overcome a rocky start. Brady finished 34-of-54 for 355 yards, 2 TDs through the air and one on the ground.

The Pats now own, essentially, a 2.5 game lead over the Jets in the AFC East. Next up for Gang Green will be the Raiders in Oakland.
