New York Yankees

In a wild and wacky game, the New York Yankees knock off the Minnesota Twins by the final of 8-7 in 10 innings on Monday night.

  • Yankees 8 (65-52), Twins 7 (59-59)
  • Win: Andrew Miller (1-2)
  • Loss: Glen Perkins (1-4)

From the very beginning this game had an uneasy feel to it. Not only was the entire Yankee Stadium crowd horrified to witness New York Yankees starting pitcher Bryan Mitchell getting smacked in the face to a line drive, but the exit of slugger Mark Teixeira upped anxiety levels to new heights.

In the end, the Yanks proved too much for the Minnesota Twins, winning 8-7 in 10-innings.

Brian McCann got the party started in the first inning with a three-run shot off Kyle Gibson.

As previously stated though, the feel-good mood didn’t last long. With Twins infielder (and former Yankee) Eduardo Nunez up at the dish, Mitchell stared right into one of the scariest things in sports.

Mitchell laid on the field helpless for a while before trainers came out to assist him. The 24-year old kid who was looking for his first big league win had to leave the field a bloody mess. Final diagnosis was a nasal fracture.

From there, the Bombers bullpen slowly gave away the lead until it was 7-5 Twins. The Yanks battled back in the bottom of the sixth to notch it up, eventually forcing a 10th-inning.

Greg Bird, who was inserted for an injured Teixeira who fouled a ball off his leg late in the game, came up huge in the final frame with a lead-off double. This led to Chase Headley ending the game on a botched play at shortstop for one of the least dramatic extra-inning wins in MLB history.

McCann finished 3-for-5 with 5 RBI. Dellin Betances and Andrew Miller both worked stellar baseball over 3.1 combined innings.

The win now puts New York one full game over the idle Toronto Blue Jays for first in the AL East.
