New York Jets

While the overwhelming sentiment is that New York Jets quarterback Geno Smith got what he deserved, Brandon Marshall disagrees.

Brandon Marshall defended New York Jets quarterback Geno Smith this morning on Fox TV.

Marshall told FOX News Channel’s “FOX & Friends” that Smith “did everything the right way” on that fateful day in the locker room.

“I was sitting right there and I would say this without going into too many details because we’ve already moved past it: Geno Smith did nothing wrong,” Marshall said on FOX TV Monday morning, via Manish Mehta of the New York Daily News. “He did nothing wrong. . . . And that’s all I’m going to say about that because we have to move forward and I don’t want to be a distraction to our team, but Geno Smith did everything the right way.”

This statement was made a few days after a locker room altercation with teammate I.K. Enemkpali left Smith with a broken jaw that will keep him out for 6-10 weeks.

Earlier this week, recently acquired cornerback Darrelle Revis told the media that he blamed both of them for what happened.

Marshall believes the lack of team support behind Smith has to do with his age.

“Because he’s young,” Marshall said. “He’s 24. It hasn’t been his team. He’s been in and out of the lineup the last couple years. There’s been a lot of question marks. But I don’t care about the past. I care about what he’s done this offseason and OTAs and in camp and leading up to that day. To me, he’s been a leader. He’s getting better at it. It wasn’t his team. He had to earn that and he still has to continue to earn that.”

To me, it doesn’t seem like Smith did much wrong. The altercation revolved around a $600 plane ticket that Smith was willing to pay for. Enemkpali could have avoided this entire situation by just waiting for the money.
