The rumors of Carlos Correa landing with the New York Mets should not be taken seriously for a variety of reasons.
Who wouldn’t want to acquire a 25-year-old shortstop who’s clubbed 20 or more home runs four times? Brodie Van Wagenen certainly falls into the “craving Carlos Correa” camp, as Andy Martino’s report that the New York Mets and Houston Astros began negotiations back in November ran wild this hot stove season.
But now, any idea of Correa in Queens should not be taken too seriously.
According to SNY’s Martino, discussions between the two teams have “fizzled.”
“The Astros and Mets conversations about a Carlos Correa trade were active from November until this week, but fizzled, at least for now, before the end of the winter meetings, per sources.”
Correa, 25, seemed destined for immortal status following the 2015 season. In just 99 games, the kid shortstop smacked 22 home runs and 68 runs batted in while batting .279.
After his first and only All-Star campaign two years later in 2017, Correa’s average slid to .239 in 2018. He just hasn’t delivered on the ridiculously sky-high expectations created when he burst onto the scene.
Falling shy of legendary expectations shouldn’t scare off any potential suitors, including the Mets.
Acquiring young position players is what this new MLB has morphed into over the last decade or so. With injured arms springing up in every direction, long, drawn-out rebuilds that focus on building around young everyday players have created champions out of the Astros, Chicago Cubs and Kansas City Royals.
Mets players who have popped up in relation to a potential Correa trade include Brandon Nimmo, Dominic Smith and Jed Lowrie. For now, Amed Rosario remains the Mets shortstop, and that’s more than OK. Rosario is coming off a season that produced incredible hope leading into 2020.
There’s no question a Carlos Correa deal can happen. But, for now, don’t take it seriously. (That is, until, it’s officially time to start thinking about it in a realistic sense.)
