The New York Giants have waived veteran wideout Bennie Fowler ahead of their Week 13 matchup with the Green Bay Packers.
At 2-9, the New York Giants have decided to make a change in their wide receiver room. The organization waived veteran wideout Bennie Fowler on Tuesday. This is the second time they’ve released Fowler this season. The Giants previously waived him on Oct. 1, only to re-sign him on Oct. 14.
Through eight games this season, Fowler caught 23 balls for 193 yards and zero touchdowns for Big Blue. His most productive game came in the Week 2 loss to the Bills, where he caught five balls on 10 targets for 51 yards. Fowler also rushed for 20 yards on one carry against Buffalo.
New York gave him extended playing time in that matchup due to Sterling Shepard, Golden Tate, and Darius Slayton all being out.
Fowler originally signed a deal with the Giants in October of the 2018 season. He then re-signed with the team in March of this year.
Prior to portraying his talents for the Giants, Fowler spent time with the Denver Broncos (2014-17), the Chicago Bears (2018), and the New England Patriots (2018). He won Super Bowl 50 with the Broncos over the Carolina Panthers in February of 2016.
Fowler was most likely released due to Shepard’s return to the game field. The Giants cleared Shepard from the concussion protocol for their most recent loss to the Chicago Bears. He had missed the previous five games due to the setback.
It’s unclear if the Giants plan to bring Fowler back at some point.
