New York Jets offensive guard Kelechi Osemele will undergo shoulder surgery, per a report from NFL.com’s Ian Rapoport.
Tuesday brought a tough break for the New York Jets, who just won their first game of the 2019 campaign.
According to Ian Rapoport of NFL.com, offensive guard Kelechi Osemele will undergo shoulder surgery. Therefore, it’s likely that he’ll miss the rest of the season. Osemele sat out the last two games for Gang Green.

Osemele, 30, has had issues with injuries in the past. He’s now in his eighth season, having only played in all 16 games twice. Osemele is in his first year with the Jets. He was with the Baltimore Ravens from 2012-15 and the Oakland Raiders from 2016-18. He’s a two-time Pro Bowler and won Super Bowl 47 with Baltimore.
The Jets will have Alex Lewis start for Osemele going forward. The veteran has started two games in Osemele’s place already. This is Lewis’ first year with the Jets, after spending time with the Ravens from 2016-18. Baltimore drafted Lewis in the fourth round (No. 130 overall) of the 2016 NFL Draft out of Nebraska.
New York’s offensive line is near the bottom of the league with 25 allowed sacks through their first five games. They improved mightily in their win over Dallas on Sunday, however, only allowing two sacks of quarterback Sam Darnold.
Sunday was Darnold’s first game since Week 1. He missed three consecutive matchups after his mononucleosis diagnosis. The Jets will look to build off their first win when they take on the New England Patriots next Monday night.
