David Cone would be interested if New York Mets pursue him for manager position

Former New York Yankees right-hander and current YES broadcaster David Cone would be interested in the New York Mets manager position.

The New York Mets officially have a vacant manager spot. New York decided to part ways with manager Mickey Callaway on Thursday after two seasons with zero postseason appearances. This comes with the Mets finishing 86-76 this season after falling 11 games under .500 at one point.

So who could be on the shortlist for the Mets’ new managerial position? Well, one possible name is former New York Yankees right-hander and current YES broadcaster David Cone. It’s unclear when the Mets will reach out to candidates, but if they were to call Cone, he’d definitely show interest.

“If someone asks you for an interview with the Yankees or Mets, it is simple, you say, ‘yes,'” Cone said, per Joel Sherman of the New York Post.

“I am at that point in my life that if something like (Mets manager) presents itself I have to seriously consider it — if not now, when?” he added. “If I am going to fully immerse myself back into the game, now would be the time.”

Cone currently works as a color commentator to Yankees play-by-play announcer Michael Kay. He, Joe Girardi, and Joe Maddon are names that definitely could be on the shortlist for the Amazins. Former Mets centerfielder Carlos Beltran was also a name that floated around. However, he’s already out as a potential candidate.

The Mets are heading into their third consecutive offseason without a postseason appearance.
