Newly-hired New York Jets general manager Joe Douglas is impressed by what wide receiver Robby Anderson can do on the field.
Joe Douglas is coming into his new role as the New York Jets general manager at an exciting time. The Jets have an improved roster, a new head coach, and potential to improve drastically from last year’s 4-12 campaign.
He’ll have Sam Darnold at quarterback, Le’Veon Bell at the starting running back spot, and safety Jamal Adams to man the defense. But one of the unsung heroes of the roster could possibly be wide receiver Robby Anderson. The young receiver through 14 games last season caught 50 balls for 752 yards and six touchdowns.
Hoping to see him even more involved in the offense in 2019, Douglas is impressed with what Anderson can do on the field.
“He’s a tough weapon for defenses to match up with, he can get behind you and he can challenge the defense vertically,” Douglas told Albert Breer of Sports Illustrated. “That was a very pleasant surprise.”
Anderson will be lining up alongside receivers Quincy Enunwa and Jamison Crowder. Douglas mentioned that Crowder is “really savvy, quick, really good route-runner.”
Douglas is happy to have Bell around in the backfield as well. The general manager described him as “probably one of the best running backs in football.”
With those weapons out wide and Bell behind Darnold, head coach Adam Gase should have some fun with this offense.
The Jets organization just needs Darnold to come into his own in year two as an NFL quarterback. Darnold had an average rookie season but should have enough experience at this point along with enough weapons around him to succeed in 2019.
Most quarterbacks begin to showcase their true abilities in year two. Just look at Patrick Mahomes, Mitch Trubisky, Jared Goff and Carson Wentz. No reason Darnold shouldn’t be included in that list of names after the 2019 season has concluded.
