Hall of Fame wide receiver Terrell Owens has some things to say about the play from New York Giants QB Eli Manning this season.
He may be done playing football, but he sure isn’t done running his mouth. Per a report from Dan Schneier of 247Sports, Hall of Famer Terrell Owens has some criticism for New York Giants quarterback Eli Manning.
In an interview with TMZ Sports, the former receiver isn’t a fan of how Manning has been performing in 2018.
“Odell can’t perform because the quarterback is not performing,” Owens said. “So, they should basically replace the quarterback.”
At this point, Owens believes the Giants should look for the next guy at the quarterback position. He believes the two-time Super Bowl MVP just doesn’t have it in him anymore to play at a high level.
“[Eli’s] skills are pretty much eroding and he’s not really giving the guys an opportunity,” Owens mentioned.
It seems Owens’s opinion on how Eli has been playing is right up there with his opinion on how he can still play in the NFL. Entertaining and funny, yes. But at the same time, flat-out absurd.
At 37-years old, in his 15th season, Eli is still putting up good numbers, regardless whether they’ve won football games or not. Through half the regular season so far, Eli has managed to stand at fourth in the league in passing yards.
With 2377 yards thus far in 2018, he only sits behind Jared Goff, Kirk Cousins, and Patrick Mahomes. All players that are younger and on better football teams than Eli is.
Star receiver Odell Beckham Jr. also stands at fourth in the NFL in receiving yards with 785. This puts him behind only Deandre Hopkins, Julio Jones and Adam Thielen. So Owens saying Eli doesn’t give anyone opportunities is beyond me and should be beyond everyone else.
Yes, he can’t move outside the pocket, but he never could. Right now, he just has a below-average offensive line. That becomes the reason why he doesn’t throw it downfield. He simply doesn’t have the time in the pocket to let these receivers get downfield.
All-in-all, stop giving out reasons to throw Eli out of New York. He’s performing well when it comes to throwing the ball. The offensive line is sub-par, and head coach Pat Shurmur hasn’t fixed the offense one bit.
