Just days into the offseason and we’re already discussing who will be back with the New York Yankees next year. Now we have some news on David Robertson.
Would any pitcher in their right mind turn down an offer to play for the New York Yankees, one of the best young teams in baseball with a World Series-caliber lineup?
Of course not. And David Robertson is absolutely no exception.
According to reports from Brendan Kuty of NJ.com, D-Rob would definitely consider coming back to the pinstripes next season. However, there’s a catch.
“But I don’t know what’s going to happen the next few months,” Robertson told reporters following the Yankees’ elimination from the playoffs on Tuesday. “I’ll wait and see what happens…I have to look out what’s best for me.”
And how could this place not be the best for Robertson? He started in the Bronx back in 2008 and spent some time in Chicago before heading back to his first baseball home in the second half of the 2017 season.
Robertson has done his time with the Yankees and he’s done incredibly well. He served as a closer as well, taking over after Mariano Rivera retired.
This season alone, Robertson put up an 8-3 record with a 3.23 ERA, coming in in high-leverage situations. He was one of Aaron Boone’s favorite calls to come out to the mound, appearing in 69 games and striking out 91 batters in 69.2 innings of work.
Another bullpen pitcher who might not be back next season is Zach Britton, their mid-season acquisition who served as an integral part of the ‘pen moving towards the playoffs.
But Robertson should be an important move for them this offseason. He knows the Bronx, he knows the team and he’s a great weapon out there in the bullpen.
I guess we’ll have to wait a little bit longer to see what happens but at least Robertson knows how special this team is. He wants in.
