The second period consisted of the two teams alternating goals back and forth with Kreider and Desharnais scoring for the Rangers and Zacha and Gibbons for the Devils. The Rangers took a 3-2 lead into the third period. Devils forward Jimmy Hayes scored early in the third period to tie the game at 3-3 and that’s how the third period ended.
In the overtime session, the Devils took a penalty, one of nine on the night for New Jersey, and a rookie taking advantage of his opportunity. 18-year old Filip Chytil scored his first goal, on the power play, at 4:56 of the overtime session to give the Rangers a 4-3 victory.
